Since 1961, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has been the key agency that enforces American interests in expanding democratic and free markets while offering assistance to those overseas who strive for a better life and hope to escape poverty or recover from disaster or engage in democratic reforms.
An independent federal government agency, USAID provides support for economic growth, agriculture and trade; global health; democracy; conflict prevention and humanitarian assistance to the following regions of the world: Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe and Eurasia and the Middle East.
In executing its activities in supporting the objectives of U.S. foreign assistance, USAID negotiates and signs contracts, grants, cooperative agreements and purchase orders (to name a few) worldwide. Each fiscal year, USAID awards approximately $4 billion in federal contracts and agreements for technical assistance, goods and/or equipment, transportation services and occasionally construction.
