The Department of Defense (DoD) is comprised of three military branches: the Army, the Air Force and the Navy—all of which conduct a wide range of operations worldwide. The mission of the U.S. Military is to fight and win our Nation’s wars, deter aggression, and maintain the freedom and dominance of land, air and sea.
The Military and military bases alike rely heavily upon defense installations and facilities being at the right place and at the right time, in the qualities and capacities needed to protect national resources. There are armed forces stationed at over 820 military base installations in at least 140 countries, with a majority or all of these installations having a procurement office. Of the DoD-requested budget of $708 billion for the 2011 fiscal year, there are $548.9 billion reserved as discretionary base budget authority and $3.9 billion in mandatory base budget authority. Under the DoD, military base purchasing officers are involved in the purchases the DoD makes, which includes aircrafts, medical supplies, electronic equipment, petroleum, chemicals, and lumber.
