Deemed the ‘world’s largest buyer of products’, the Federal Government of the United States spends billions of dollars annually, offering a multitude of opportunities for businesses to market their products and services. In fact, not only do federal agencies uphold a statutory obligation to consider small businesses for contracting opportunities, but several agencies also require a certain amount of procurements to be reserved for small businesses.
Federal contracting agents are those who are responsible for making government-buying decisions. According to the United States Code, a federal contractor is anyone who ‘enters into a contract with the United States or any department or agency thereof for the rendition of personal services and whose compensation is paid in whole or in part from funds appropriated from Congress’. For the 2011 fiscal year, the Federal Government is managing a budget of $2.3 billion. Government agencies purchase products and services over a broad spectrum of fields: from office supplies, to maintenance and health services, to complex military and space vehicles.
