America’s oldest and largest government agency, the Department of Defense (DoD), operates with a particular mission in mind: providing the military forces needed to deter war and protecting the security of the United States. The DoD engages in fighting wars, humanitarian aid, peacekeeping, disaster relief and homeland security. In order to maintain national security, the DoD relies on defense installations and facilities to be available at the right place and at the right time, in the qualities and capacities needed to protect national resources.

The DoD requested a budget of $708 billion for the 2011 fiscal year. Some of the purchases the DoD makes include, but are not limited to: aircrafts, space launch vehicles and spacecraft, medical supplies, electronic equipment, military vehicles, munitions, petroleum, chemicals and lumber. The top five products or services purchased by the Pentagon are as follows: Aircraft, Fixed Wing; Liquid Propellants and Fuels, Petroleum Base; Combat, Assault and Tactical Vehicles, Tracked; Engineering and Technical Services; and Trucks and Truck Tractors, Wheeled.
