The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) prepares for and responds to all hazards and disasters that threaten the American people within, at, and outside its borders. Within the DHS is an agency delegated with building and supporting the nation’s emergency management system, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Whether it is a hurricane, earthquake, tornado, flood, fire, hazardous spill, act of nature or act of terrorism, the tasks undertaken by FEMA are broad. However, their mission is simple: to offer support to U.S. citizens and first responders to ensure that we can work as a nation to build and sustain our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards and disasters that come our way.
The DHS has a $56.3 budget request for the 2011 fiscal year, allowing them, and by extension FEMA, to purchase a variety of goods and services needed to perform their respective missions accordingly. Some of the goods and services needed for disaster relief include: emergency and rescue; building and construction; food and cooking supplies; temporary housing and shelter; medical supplies; electronic/power equipment; personal care and hygienic products; vehicles and heavy equipment; temporary staffing; emergency food services; communicative solutions; environmental services; law enforcement and security solutions, and furniture.
